I have always loved going to farmers' markets. It has always felt like community, like I was putting my money in the right place, like something right in the world. When Common Ground considered taking on the Beacon Farmers' Market, it felt right--like an extension of our work as a community farm, because it would allow us to support the livelihood of more local farmers and build a sustainable local food system. As we grew into our work at the Beacon Farmers' Market, we found that the market is also a critical space for food access work, and we worked to ensure that the market is affordable and accessible to all people in our community by taking all food benefits and offering Greens4Greens, our own community supported double up program, that increases the purchasing power of SNAP, FMNP, and WIC customers. This year we have grown our food access programming again: now all vendors participate in Greens4Greens and we have developed an end of market donation program that supports a free Monday food distribution program. Purchasing a T-shirt supports local agriculture, our community, and a more just food system.
