In 2007 Kalene and I opened an art gallery called OPENSPACE on the sleepy east end of Main Street in Beacon. We had grand plans of what we wanted to do there. We wanted to showcase art we loved, events we found interesting, music that spoke to our souls, and really anything else we could think of. We also hoped to meet people, like us, that were as excited to do fun things in town. One of the first people we met that shared our enthusiasm for building community was Stephen Clair. It was likely in that first conversation that we set a date for him to play music at the gallery. people came, stephen sang and that was the beginning of 13 years of friendship and collaboration that has woven through concerts big and small, ambitions event coordination, illustrations, Album Art, flyer design, murals, equipment swaps and even a few music lessons...
A few year after we first met, and had already collaborated on a music festival and a few small concerts at the gallery Stephen started a music school in town. The Beacon Music Factory started in the basement of a church, and then moved to the back of a private school, then to the basement of a bowling alley and finally it's own building next. It has been super inspiring to watch Stephen grow his school and his influence on the local music scene from an idea into an institution. BMF is a cornerstone of the music scene in the Hudson Valley and this shirt represents that position.
