At the beginning of the pandemic there were some organizations in Beacon who really stepped up and filled the needs of certain holes that were left in the social fabric, particularly around community food access. Common Ground Farm partnered and continues to partner with community organizations to make sure that people who don't have access to healthy food are supported during this very intense and emotional time. People who can't afford to go to the supermarket any more because of loss of income, people who aren't able to get to the supermarket and pick up their own groceries any more because of safety concerns, etc. are all supported by the work of Common Ground Farm and their partnerships with the Beacon City School District, Fareground, and Mutual Aid Beacon, in addition to a number of other emergency relief organizations. I was really inspired by the way that Common Ground Farm stepped into the role of leadership in this moment of crisis in our community. Examples of this leadership includes being able to act as a fiscal sponsor for newer organizations while creatively expanding and modifying their own programs to meet the unique needs of the time.
